Methodology Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) 
Description Useful for the qualitative detection of IgG antibody to mumps virus in human sera. The presence of demonstrable IgG generally indicates immunity acquired naturally or via immunization. 
Specimen Draw blood in either a plain, red-top tube or serum gel tube. Spin down and send 1.0 mL (minimum volume: 0.5 mL) of serum refrigerated in a screw-capped, plastic vial. If specimen will not arrive within 2 days of draw, send specimen FROZEN in plastic vial on dry ice. 
Reference Values Negative: Negative for mumps IgG antibodies, presumed non-immune to mumps infection
Equivocal: Equivocal for mumps IgG antibodies, suggest retesting in 10 - 14 days if clinically indicated
Positive: Positive for mumps IgG antibodies, presumed immune to mumps infection
