Test OSMOTIC FRAGILITY, ERYTHROCYTES 
Methodology Osmotic Lysis 
Description Useful for diagnosis of suspected hereditary spherocytic hemolytic anemia. 
Specimen NOTE: Specimens must arrive within 72 hours of draw.

Container/Tube: Lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s) plus a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s) as a control specimen
Specimen Volume: 5 mL (minimum 2mL) of fresh whole blood plus 5 mL (minimum 2mL) of whole blood as a control specimen.

Collection Instructions:
1. Immediately refrigerate specimens after draw. (DO NOT FREEZE) Do not transfer blood to other containers.
2. Include a control specimen drawn at the same time from a normal, unrelated, non-smoking individual. Label clearly on outermost label normal control. Indicate sex of control on tube(s) label.
3. Rubber band patient specimen and control vial together.
Note: Indicate patient's date of birth. 

Reference Values > or =12 months:
0.50 g/dL NaCl (unincubated): 3-53% hemolysis
0.60 g/dL NaCl (incubated): 14-74% hemolysis
0.65 g/dL NaCl (incubated): 4-40% hemolysis
0.75 g/dL NaCl (incubated): 1-11% hemolysis

Reference values have not been established for
patients who are <12 months of age.
