Description Includes analysis of porphyrins formed

Useful for diagnosis of porphyria cutanea tarda and hepatoerythrohepatic porphyria. 

Specimen All porphyrin tests on whole blood can be performed on 1 draw tube.

Specimen must arrive within 48 hours of draw.

If specimen cannot arrive within 48 hours, order #31892 "Uroporphyrinogen Decarboxylase (UPG D), Washed Erythrocytes."

Container/Tube: Green-top (heparin) tube
Specimen Volume: Full tube (minimum volume: 3 mL) of blood

Collection Instructions:
1. Patient should abstain form alcohol for 24 hours.
Note: Include a list of medications the patient is currently taking and forward with the specimen.
2. Immediately place specimen on wet ice.
3. Test will be cancelled if frozen whole blood is received. 

Reference Values 1.0 - 3.0 Relative Units (normal)
0.80 - 0.99 Relative Units (marginal)
< 0.80 Relative Units (porphyria cutanea tarda or hepatoerythrohepaticporphyria)
