Test Code ROC-M
Test RUBEOLA (MEASLES) ANTIBODIES, IgG AND IgM (SEPARATE DETERMINATIONS), SPINAL FLUID
Methodology Immunofluorescence
Description Useful for diagnosis of central nervous system infection with rubeola (measles) virus and / or subacute sclerosing panencephalitis
Specimen 0.25 mL (minimum: 0.1 mL) of spinal fluid. Send specimen refrigerated in a screw-capped, round-bottom, plastic vial. Forward promptly.

NOTE:
1. WHEN THIS TEST IS ORDERED, BOTH SERUM AND SPINAL FLUID MUST BE SENT. IN ADDITION TO THIS TEST, ORDER "RUBEOLA (MEASLES) ANTIBODIES, IgG AND IgM (SEPARATE DETERMINATIONS), SERUM". AN ADDITIONAL CHARGE WILL BE MADE FOR THE COMBINED DETERMINATIONS.
2. Label specimens appropriately (serum and spinal fluid).

Reference Values IgG: < 1:5
IgM: < 1:10

The presence of IgM class antibodies or a fourfold or greater rise in paired sera IgG titer indicates recent infection. The presence of demonstrable IgG generally indicates past exposure and immunity. See the Virology section of "Microbiology" for additional interpretive information.
