PORPHYRINS TOTAL, PLASMA

Test Code 8731M
Test PORPHYRINS TOTAL, PLASMA
Methodology Porphyrins Total: Extraction and Scanning Spectrofluorometry
Porphyrins Fractionation: High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

If porphyrins, total is > 1.0 ug/dL, then porphyrins
fractionation will be performed at an additional charge.

Description The porphyrias are a diverse group of disorders caused by
defects in the biosynthesis of heme and characterized by
accumulations of porphyrinogens and porphyrins in plasma,
red blood cells, tissues, urine, and/or feces.

Plasma porphyrin concentrations in plasma may be increased
in association with porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT), congenital
erythropoietic porphyria (CEP), erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), hereditary coproporphyria (HCP), or ariegate porphyria (VP).
In addition, persons with chronic renal failure may develop a
bullous dermatosis similar to that associated with PCT and
also may have increased plasma porphyrins (renal failure porphyria).

Specimen 1. Patient should abstain from alcohol for 24 hours
2. Draw blood in green-top (heparin) tube(s). (PLASMA GEL tube is not acceptable). Spin down and send 3.0 mL (minimum: 1.0 mL) of heparinized plasma FROZEN in amber plastic vial to protect from light.
3. Please include a list of medications the patient is currently
taking and forward with the specimen.

NOTE: SPECIMENS NOT PROTECTED FROM LIGHT ARE UNACCEPTABLE.

Reference Values < or = 1.0 ug/dL
Analytic Time 2 Days
Day(s) Test Set Up Monday through Friday
CPT Code(s) 82492  Porphyrins Fractionation, plasma (if appropriate)
