|Description||Useful for a follow-up marker in patients with NSE-secreting tumors of any type, as an auxiliary test in the diagnosis of small-cell lung carcinoma, and in the diagnosis of carcinoids, islet cell tumors and neuroblastomas, and as auxiliary tool in the assessment of comatose patients.

|Specimen||Draw blood in a plain, red-top or serum gel tube(s). Spin down and send 0.5 mL (minimum: 0.3 mL) of serum refrigerated. One freeze-thaw cycle may decrease NSE values 15% to 20%.
NOTE: Specimens that are icteric or hemolyzed, regardless of level, will be rejected.
