Methodology Homogeneous Time-Resolved Fluorescence 
Description Useful for a follow-up marker in patients with NSE-secreting tumors of any type, as an auxiliary test in the diagnosis of small-cell lung carcinoma, and in the diagnosis of carcinoids, islet cell tumors and neuroblastomas, and as auxiliary tool in the assessment of comatose patients.

NOTE:
1. Third party billing IS NOT AVAILABLE for this test. When ordered on Medicare patients, a properly executed Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) must be submitted with the specimen.
2. Performance characteristics have been determined by the performing laboratory. Results should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical findings. 

Specimen Draw blood in a plain, red-top or serum gel tube(s). Spin down and send 0.5 mL (minimum: 0.3 mL) of serum refrigerated. One freeze-thaw cycle may decrease NSE values 15% to 20%.

NOTE: Specimens that are icteric or hemolyzed, regardless of level, will be rejected.

Serum markers are not specific for malignancy, and values may vary by method.
