Methodology Conventional Culture 
Description Useful for the detection of group A streptococci. Refer to separate listings for suspected yeast, pertussis, or diptheria infections. 
Specimen 1. Place gentle pressure on tongue with tongue depressor.
2. Extend one or two sterile swabs between the tonsillar pillars and behind the uvula, avoiding the tongue, buccal mucosa and uvula.
3. Sweep the swabs back and forth across the posterior pharynx, tonsillar areas and any inflamed or exudative areas.
4. Submit swab(s) in culture transport media tube.
5. Label tube with patientís name (first and last), date of birth or medical record number, date and time of collection, collectorís initials and specimen source.
6. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

NOTE: SPECIMEN SOURCE IS REQUIRED ON REQUEST FORM FOR PROCESSING.
