Methodology Conventional/Rapid Culture 
Description Includes "Acid Fast Smear for Mycobacterium"
Positive cultures reflex to organism identification and antibiotic susceptibility tests.
Additional charges apply. 
Specimen Collect specimen aseptically and place in screw capped sterile container.

Bronchoalveolar Lavage: 5 - 10 mL
Gastric Lavage: Requires special handling; call Microbiology prior to collection specimen. Fasting, early morning, 3 separate days
Sputum: 5 - 10 mL, early morning, 3 separate days
Urine: 40 - 100 mL, first morning, 3 separate days
Other Specimens: Send as much specimen as possible up to 100 mL.
Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

NOTE: Specimen source is required on request form for processing. 

Reference Values No acid fast bacilli isolated
If positive, mycobacterium will be identified.
Positive smear or culture is a critical value with auto call-back. 
Analytic Time Positives are reported when detected. Negatives are reported in 60 Days
