Methodology Ion-Selective Electrode (ISE) 
Description Useful for monitoring therapy of patients with bipolar disorders, including recurrent episodes of mania and depression, and for evaluating toxicity. 
Specimen Draw blood in either a plain, red-top tube or serum gel tube 12 hours after last dose. Spin down and send 1.0 mL (0.5 mL minimum) of serum refrigerated.

NOTE:
1. Indicate serum on request form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum). 

Reference Values THERAPEUTIC RANGE:
-Therapeutic concentration: 0.5 - 1.2 mEq/L
-Bipolar disorder: 0.6 - 1.2 mEq/L
-Acute mania: 0.8 - 1.2 mEq/L
-Augmentation treatment for depression: 0.5 - 0.8 mEq/L
-Toxic concentration < 65 years of age: >/= 1.5 mEq/L
-Toxic concentration >/= 65 years of age: >/= 1.3 mEq/L
