|Test||CYTOKERATIN 5 / 6 IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY STAIN|
|Description||Cytokeratin 5/6 reacts with cytokeratins with molecular weight of 58kDa and 56kDa. It stains the basal cells of squamous and glandular epithelia, the stratum spinosum of squamous epithelium, myoepithelium and mesothelium. It does not, however, stain glandular epithelium. Therefore, the Cytokeratin 5/6 antibody can be used to distinguish squamous cell carcinoma (positive) from adenocarcinoma (negative), and to differentiate epithelial mesothelioma (positive) from non-epithelial mesothelioma and adenocarcinoma (negative).
NOTE: This test is usually ordered in conjunction with a pathology consultation. The pathology professional component will be billed separately by the consulting pathologist.
