|Test||ALPHA-FETOPROTEIN (AFP) IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY STAIN|
|Description||Alpha-fetoprotein is seen in hepatocytes of fetal liver and hepatoma. It can be demonstrated in yolk sac carcinomas of gonadal and extragonadal sites and in hepatic malignancies. AFP positivity is useful in distinguishing embryonal carcinoma and endodermal sinus tumors from other germ cell tumors which are AFP negative.
NOTE: This test is usually ordered in conjunction with a pathology consultation. The pathology professional component will be billed separately by the consulting pathologist.
