APALK-1
ANAPLASTIC LYMPHOMA KINASE (ALK-1), IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY STAIN

Test Code APALK-1
Test ANAPLASTIC LYMPHOMA KINASE (ALK-1), IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY STAIN
Description Normal ALK protein expression is restricted to the central nervous system (scattered neurons, glial cells and endothelial cells). In many cases of anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), the t(2:5)(p23:q35) chromosomal translocation is found, which results in the production of NPM-ALK protein (Nucleophosmin-Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase). Positive ALK-1 immunostaining usually represents the presence of NPM-ALK protein. ALK has also been detected in some cases of large B-cell lymphoma that lack the translocation.

NOTE: This test is usually ordered in conjunction with a pathology consultation. The pathology professional component will be billed separately by the consulting pathologist.
