|Test||ANAPLASTIC LYMPHOMA KINASE (ALK-1), IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY STAIN|
|Description||Normal ALK protein expression is restricted to the central nervous system (scattered neurons, glial cells and endothelial cells). In many cases of anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), the t(2:5)(p23:q35) chromosomal translocation is found, which results in the production of NPM-ALK protein (Nucleophosmin-Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase). Positive ALK-1 immunostaining usually represents the presence of NPM-ALK protein. ALK has also been detected in some cases of large B-cell lymphoma that lack the translocation.
NOTE: This test is usually ordered in conjunction with a pathology consultation. The pathology professional component will be billed separately by the consulting pathologist.
