Methodology Ion-Selective Electrode (ISE) 
Description Useful for liver transplantation surgery, cardiopulmonary bypass, or any procedure requiring rapid transfusion of whole blood; second order test in patients with abnormal calcium levels. 
Specimen Draw blood in a serum gel tube (SST). Spin down, but DO NOT TRANSFER OR OPEN TUBE. Send specimen refrigerated. The results will be normalized to a pH of 7.40. 
MMC Specimen Draw blood in a dark green-top lithium heparin tube. The preferred specimen is greater than 3.0 mL in a 4.0 mL dark green tube (minimum 1.5 mL) or greater than 1.5 mL in a lithium heparin 2.0 mL tube (minimum 1.0 mL)

Pediatric specimen minimum is 0.4 mL in a dark green lithium heparin microtainer.

NOTE: Do not uncap tube once specimen is collected. 

Reference Values 1 day to 20 years: 1.1 - 1.4 mmol/L
> 20 years: 1.10 - 1.35 mmol/L

Critical value: <=0.75 or >=1.6 mmol/L
