|Methodology||Ultracentrifugation/Electrophoresis/Automated Enzymatic Colorimetric Analysis|
|Description||Includes total cholesterol, total triglyceride, phenotyping (including type III), and quantitation of cholesterol and triglycerides in VLDL, LDL, HDL, Lp(a), and any other significant lipoprotein fractions.
Useful for determining existence and type of dyslipoproteinemia.
NOTE: This test, when ordered on Medicare patients, is subject to the Local Coverage Determination (LCD) policy "Lipids Testing". Please verify that the diagnosis code (ICD-9) you have chosen demonstrates medical necessity for the test as documented in the physician's patient record. The carrier web site, CMS web site or the NorDx Limited Coverage Documentation Guide are available to assist you with this verification. A properly executed Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) must be submitted with the specimen if medical necessity is not demonstrated by the ICD-9 code chosen.
|Specimen||Draw blood in a serum separator tube following an overnight (12 - 14 hour) fast. Spin down and send 5.0 mL (minimum: 2.0 mL) of serum refrigerated in a screw-capped plastic vial.
NOTE: Patient must not consume any alcohol for 24 hours before the specimen is drawn.
