Methodology Qualitative Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) 
Description Useful for aiding in the diagnosis of Enterovirus infection. This assay detects human Enteroviruses, including the EV-D68, Coxsackie viruses, Polioviruses and the Echoviruses. It does not differentiate among the EV serotypes. 
Specimen SPECIMEN SOURCE IS REQUIRED.

SWAB: NASOPHARYNGEAL, DERMAL, RECTAL, or other collection sites clinically indicated.
Collect specimen from the affected site using the flocked swab provided with red top UTM collection kit. Label with the specimen source and send refrigerated. (Dry swab or swab containing gel is not acceptable for PCR testing).

CEREBROSPINAL FLUID (CSF)
1.0 mL (minimum volume: 0.5 mL) of CSF. Send specimen refrigerated in a screw-capped, sterile vial. Specimens grossly contaminated with blood may inhibit the PCR and produce false negative results

PLASMA
Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube. Spin down and separate plasma from cells, send 1 mL plasma (minimum volume 0.5 mL) refrigerated.
