Methodology Spectrophotometric 
Description Useful in diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (non-gestational) 
Specimen NOTE: Glucose Tolerance Tests are drawn at NorDx Patient Service Centers Monday through Friday only.

Draw blood in either a plain, red-top tube or serum gel tube two hours after glucola has been administered (HEMOLYZED SPECIMEN IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.). Spin down and separate serum from clot within 2 hours. Send 1.0 mL (minimum volume: 0.3 mL) of serum refrigerated.

A gray sodium fluoride tube may be substituted if the specimen cannot be spun and separated within two hours of collection. Send refrigerated 

Reference Values Normal
Fasting: 70-99 mg/dL
2 hours: 70-139 mg/dL

Prediabetes:
Fasting: 100 - 125 mg/dL
2 hour: 140 - 199 mg/dL

Diabetes:
Fasting: > or = 126 mg/dL
2 hour: > = 200 mg/dL
