Methodology CO-oximetry 
Description Useful for determining the extent of carbon monoxide poisoning, for checking on the effect of smoking on the patient, and in working up persons exposed to fires and smoke inhalation.

Includes Carboxyhemoglobin and Methemoglobin. 

Specimen Draw blood in a dark green-top Lithium Heparin tube, (Sodium Heparin is acceptable). Send the entire tube of whole blood. Avoid exposure of specimen to atmosphere.

NOTE: DO NOT OPEN TUBE.

The stability of the unopened specimen is 2 weeks refrigerated or at room temperature. 

MMC Specimen Draw blood in either a dark green-top Lithium Heparin tube (Sodium Heparin is acceptable) or a heparinized syringe.

NOTE: DO NOT OPEN TUBE.

The stability of the unopened green-top tube is 2 weeks refrigerated or at room temperature. 

Reference Values Heavy smokers : 5.0 - 9.0% saturation
Smokers: 1.5 - 5.0% saturation
Nonsmokers : Less than 1.5% saturation

Critical value: Greater than 15.0% saturation
