Methodology Fluorescence Polarization Immunoassay (FPIA) 
Specimen Draw blood in either a plain, red-top or serum gel tube 60 minutes after an intramuscular injection or 30 minutes after a 30 minute infusion or immediately following a 60 minute infusion. Spin down and send 0.5 mL of serum FROZEN in plastic vial on dry ice.

NOTE:
1. SPECIMENS CONTAINING ADDITIONAL ANTIBIOTICS SHOULD BE STORED FROZEN IF ANY DELAY IN ANALYSIS OR MORE THAN 8 HOURS IN TRANSPORT TIME IS ANTICIPATED. FAILURE TO FREEZE SPECIMEN CONTAINING ADDITIONAL ANTIBIOTICS MAY RESULT IN FALSELY LOW AMIKACIN LEVELS DUE TO IN VITRO INACTIVATION.
2. Specimens containing kanamycin A, kanamycin B will yield falsely elevated values for amikacin.
