Methodology Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) 
Description Useful for assessing the cause of abnormal serum magnesium; assessing whether the body is receiving adequate nutrition. 
Specimen 5 mL (minimum volume: 2.2 mL) from a 24-hour urine collection. Add 10 mL 6N HCl at the start of collection. Adjust final pH to 1.5 - 2.0 with 6N HCl. Mix well and measure. For multiple collection, see "Urine Preservatives". Send aliquot refrigerated in a clean plastic aliquot container. Indicate 24-hour volume on the requisition.
