|Test Code||MANPL / MNS-M|
|Methodology||Dynamic Reaction Cell Inductively Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometry (DRC-ICP-MS)|
|Description||Useful for detecting toxic manganese exposure.|
|Specimen||Draw blood in a royal blue-top Monoject® trace element blood collection tube. Allow specimen to clot for 30 minutes, then spin down and carefully pour 1.0 mL (minimum: 0.5 mL) of serum into a 7.0 mL metal free, screw-capped, polypropylene vial. Avoid transfer of cellular components of blood. DO NOT insert a pipet into the serum to accomplish transfer, and DO NOT ream the specimen with a wooden stick to assist with serum transfer. It is important that the specimen be obtained, processed, and transported according to instructions on "Metals Analysis - Collection and Transport."
Send specimen refrigerated. All specimens to be stored more than 48 hours should be sent FROZEN.
Note: High concentrations of gadolinium and iodine are known to interfere with most metals tests. If either gadolinium- or iodine-containing contrast media has been administered, a specimen should not be collected for 96 hours.
Reference values have not been established for patients that are <18 years of age.
