Methodology Microscopic examination following staining with Sudan IV 
Description Useful for detecting the presence of fecal fatty acids and neutral fat 
Specimen 3 g (0.5 g minimum) of fresh, random stool in a screw-capped plastic vial, refrigerated.

NOTE:
1. Do not contaminate outside of container.
2. Do not overfill container.
3. Patient should be on a diet containing at least 60 g of fat.
4. Patient should not use suppositories or mineral oil before the specimen is collected. Oily material (creams, lubricants, etc.) should be avoided prior to collection of the specimen.
5. Administration of barium, bismuth, Metamucil®, castor oil, mineral oil, or ingestion of oily salad dressing is contraindicated within 1 week prior to collection of the specimen. 

Reference Values Total fats (neutral fats, soaps, and fatty acids): normal (<100
droplets/hpf)
Neutral fats: normal (<60 droplets/hpf)
