HSVQL
HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS (HSV), DNA

Test Code HSVQL
Test HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS (HSV), DNA
Methodology Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
This test replaces Culture Virus HSV.
(PCR is utilized pursuant to a license agreement with Roche Molecular Systems, Inc.)
Description Useful for detection of HSV-1 and HSV-2 DNA in CSF, blood, and other specimens

This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by NorDx. It has not been cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA has determined that such clearance or approval is not required. The diagnostic utility for this test has been validated by NorDx. This test is used for clinical purposes, and should not be regarded as investigational or for research use only.

Specimen SUBMIT ONLY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING SPECIMENS:

CEREBROSPINAL FLUID (CSF)
1.0 mL (minimum volume: 0.5 mL) of CSF. Send specimen refrigerated in a screw-capped, sterile vial. Specimens grossly contaminated with blood may inhibit the PCR and produce false negative results. The high sensitivity of amplification by PCR requires the specimen to be processed in an environment in which contamination of the specimen by HSV DNA is not likely.
NOTE: SPECIMEN SOURCE IS REQUIRED ON REQUEST FORM FOR PROCESSING.

DERMAL, GENITAL, THROAT AND ORAL SPECIMENS
Collect specimen from the affected site using the swab provided with viral transport medium. (Calcium alginate-tipped swab or transport swab containing gel is not acceptable for PCR testing). Send specimen refrigerated. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
NOTE: SPECIMEN SOURCE IS REQUIRED ON REQUEST FORM FOR PROCESSING.

BLOOD
Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s). Send 1 mL EDTA whole blood, or plasma (minimum volume 0.5 mL) refrigerated.

Reference Values HSV-1 and HSV-2 not detected.
Positive results reported as:
HSV-1 detected,
HSV-2 detected,
or HSV-1 and HSV-2 detected
A positive result on a CSF specimen is a critical value with auto call-back.
Analytic Time 1 Day; Maximum Laboratory Time - 5 Days (Swabs) - 2 Days (CSF)
Day(s) Test Set Up CSF: Monday through Saturday. Other specimens: Monday, Wednesday and Friday
CPT Code(s) 87529
