|Test||HBME-1, IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY STAIN|
|Description||HBME-1 has been demonstrated to immunostain the membrane and cytoplasm of normal pleura and peritoneal mesothelial cells and of neoplastic epithelial mesothelioma cells. Although both the membrane and cytoplasm of epithelial mesothelioma cells stain positive with HBME-1, the thick membrane staining pattern was found to be a more diagnostically useful marker of malignant mesothelioma. HBME-1 is useful in the differential diagnosis of adenocarcinoma (-) vs. mesothelioma (+). It is also positive in thyroid malignancies including papillary, follicular, and in some medullary carcinomas.
NOTE: This test is usually ordered in conjunction with a pathology consultation. The pathology professional component will be billed separately by the consulting pathologist.
