Test CHLORAMPHENICOL 
Methodology High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) 
Description Useful for monitoring adequacy of blood concentration during Chloramphenicol therapy 
Specimen SUBMIT ONLY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING SPECIMENS:

PLASMA
Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube. (PLASMA GEL TUBE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.) Spin down and send 1.0 mL (minimum: 0.2 mL) of EDTA plasma FROZEN in screw-capped, plastic vial. Plasma for a peak level should be drawn 30 minutes after completion of infusion of an intravenous dose or 60 minutes after an intramuscular or oral dose of the antimicrobial to be assayed.
NOTE: Indicate plasma on both the request form and specimen
label.

SERUM
Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube. (SERUM GEL TUBE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.) Spin down and send 1.0 mL (minimum: 0.2 mL) of serum FROZEN in screw-capped, plastic vial. Serum for a peak level should be drawn 30 minutes after completion of infusion of an intravenous dose or 60 minutes after an intramuscular or oral dose of the antimicrobial to be assayed.
NOTE: Indicate serum on both the request form and specimen
label.

SPINAL FLUID
1.0 mL (minimum: 0.2 mL) of spinal fluid. Send specimen FROZEN in a plastic vial.
NOTE: Indicate spinal fluid on both the request form and
specimen label. 

Reference Values PLASMA OR SERUM
Peak: 15 - 25 g/mL
Trough: 8 - 10 g/mL
