Methodology Automated Immunochemiluminescent Assay (ICMA) 
Description Useful for differentiating the diagnosis of Addison's disease (primary adrenal insufficiency) and adrenal insufficiency secondary to pituitary dysfunction. Also can be used in identifying the cause of cortisol hypersecretion in Cushing's syndrome. 
Specimen Draw blood in an ice-cooled, lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s). Spin
down in a refrigerated centrifuge, immediately separate plasma
from cells, and send 1.0 mL (minimum 0.5 mL) of EDTA plasma frozen in plastic vial.
Morning (6 a.m.-10 a.m.) specimens are desirable. 
Reference Values Pediatrics: No established reference values

Adults: 10 - 60 pg/mL (a.m. draws)
No established reference values for p.m. draws
