Methodology Radioimmunoassay (RIA) 
Description In conjunction with family history, HLA-typing and measurement of other islet cell autoantibodies, insulin autoantibody measurements are useful in predicting the future development of type I diabetes in asymptomatic children, adolescents and yound adults. It is also useful in the differential diagnosis of type I versus type II diabetes, in evaluating diabetics with insulin resistance, and in the investigation of hypoglycemia in non-diabetic subjects. 
Specimen Draw blood in either a plain, red-top tube or serum gel tube from a fasting patient. Spin down and send 1.5 mL (minimum: 1.0 mL) of serum refrigerated in plastic vial. 
Reference Values < or = 0.02 nmol/L 
Analytic Time 2 days/negative    3 days/positive
