Test Code INSLN
Methodology Electrochemiluminescence Immunoassay
Description Determination of insulin levels, along with proinsulin and C-peptide measurements, may be useful in the diagnosis of insulinoma. The assay may also be used in the management of diabetes mellitus.

No sample should be collected on patients receiving therapy with high biotin doses(i.e. biotin therapy for Multiple Sclerosis or oncology patients; skin, hair and nail supplements, or multivitamins containing > 5 mg/day) until at least 12 hours after the last biotin administration. If unsure, or if the clinical picture does not fit the results please contact the laboratory . We have methods to check for biotin interference as well as for any other interferences and for the accuracy of the results.

Biotin interference would falsely decrease the result of this assay.

NOTE: This test is intended for adult patients only.

Specimen Draw blood in either a plain, red-top tube or serum gel tube from a fasting patient. Spin down and send 1.0 mL (minimum volume: 0.25 mL for pediatric patients - no repeats) of serum frozen in plastic vial. Frozen specimen preferred, but refrigerated is acceptable. Insulin is stable for 24 hours at 2 - 8° C.

1. Patients with a history of insulin usage may have insulin antibodies which cause an inaccurate assay result.
2. This procedure is specific for human insulin, therefore some synthetic insulins may not be measured accurately.
3. If multiple specimens are collected, send separate request form for each specimen. Clearly label each specimen with the collection time.
4. Hemolysis interferes with this assay. A new specimen will be requested if a hemolyzed specimen is received.
5. Erroneous findings may be obtained from samples taken from patients who have been treated with monoclonal mouse antibodies or have received them for diagnostic purposes.
6. Extremely high titers of antibodies to strepavidin can occur in isolated cases and cause interference.

Reference Values 2.6 - 24.9 ľU/mL

NOTE: Reference ranges are for adult and fasting specimens only.
