|Methodology||Liquid Chromatography - Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)|
|Description||Useful as the best screening test for congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) caused by either 11-hydroxylase of 21-hydroxylase deficiency; also useful as part of a battery of tests to evaluate females with hirsutism or infertility.
NOTE: This test is intended for adult patients only. For pediatric patients, please order 17-HYDROXYPROGESTERONE, PEDIATRIC, SERUM (17HPE).
|Specimen||Draw blood in a plain red-top tube. (SERUM GEL TUBE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.) Spin down and send 0.5 mL (minimum: 0.25 mL) of serum refrigerated in a plastic, screw-capped vial.
NOTE: Indicate patient's age and sex on request form.
Preterm infants may exceed 630 ng/dL however it is uncommon to see levels reach 1000 ng/dL
0-28 days: <630 ng/dL
Levels fall from newborn (<630 ng/dL) to prepubertal gradually within 6 months.
Prepubertal males: <110 ng/dL
