Test ACETAMINOPHEN (TYLENOL®), SERUM
Methodology Enzymatic
Description Useful for monitoring toxicity in overdose cases.
Serum concentration and half-life are the only way to assess the degree of intoxication in early stages, since other liver function studies will not show clinically siginficant increases until after tissue damage has occurred, at which point therapy is ineffective.
Specimen Draw blood in either a plain, red-top tube or serum gel tube no sooner than 2 hours post ingestion. Spin down and send 0.5 mL of serum refrigerated.

NOTE: In suspected overdose cases, draw blood 4 hours post ingestion and at 8 hour intervals thereafter until concentration is
< 50 mcg/mL.

MMC Specimen Draw blood in a plasma gel tube no sooner than 2 hours post ingestion. Spin down and send 0.5 mL of serum refrigerated.
